1. Background and purpose of the guidelines
These guidelines apply to the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the publications of Laurea University of Applied Sciences eported in the Ministry of Education and Culture’s publication data collection.. The aim of these guidelines is to ensure openness, responsibility and compliance with ethical research practices in the use of AI. The guidelines are based on Laurea’s artificial intelligence guidelines and the recommendation of the Ministry of Education and Culture and the Finnish National Agency for Education on the use of artificial intelligence in teaching and publications.
Only publications based on research or the expertise of the author and containing new scientific, professional or generalized content may be reported in the Ministry of Education and Culture’s data collection of publications (Handbook for the Data Collection of Publications 2025, in Finnish). The publication must be based on the authors’ own thinking and expertise so that Laurea can report the publication in the Ministry of Education and Culture’s data collection of publications. AI can be used as support when producing publications, but the content and the original idea of the publication must be created by the author(s).
2. Use of AI in publications
AI can help with content production, but its use must be described in the publication. Examples of what you can use AI for:
You can also use the AI-based features of different applications to do preliminary analyses, for example. However, an analysis produced by AI should be reflectedd analytically by the author(s) in the manuscript.
If the publication contains parts produced by AI, you must justify the use of AI and mention it in the text. You can write, for example: “Next, we will present views produced by artificial intelligence and reviewed by the writer”. The authors must reflect on any text produced by AI and check that it has not hallucinated when creating the text or adding sources. The authors are always responsible for the publication’s information content.
3. Authorship and responsibility
A person who has made a significant contribution to the design and writing of content may be named as the author of the publication.
AI cannot be the writer because it cannot be responsible for the content or participate in professional or scientific discussion (TENK, RI Guidelines 2023). The authors are always responsible for the content of the text and the correctness of the source references. The authors must check all sections that have been edited with AI.
Authors must ensure that they have the right to upload the material to AI. Before uploading the material to AI, the authors must read the AI application’s terms of use and check what rights the application will have to the material entered. Read more about the classification and processing of data at Laurea on the intranet (in Finnish). Please prioritise using AI tools recommended by Laurea.
4. Notification obligation
All publications created with the help of AI must include a description of:
The general description on the use of AI should be added to the beginning or end of the publication or both. If AI has been used in writing s specific section – for example methods or preliminary analysis – the use of AI must be mentioned in the beginning of that section. The description of the use of AI in the publication can also be provided as a separate attachment,
