Keenious is an AI-based article search tool. It differs from traditional article search services in that the search feed does not have to consist of carefully thought-out keywords. Keenious is able to perform a search on the basis of extensive and free-form text. For example, a whole article or a paragraph of the text under the author's work is acceptable as a search feed. Traditional search-word type search is also possible.
Keenious uses artificial intelligence to convert a search feed into keywords. It then targets a search index called OpenAlex. Search results are sought from more than 100 million scientific articles. Keenious itself does not include full text articles, but provides links to both freely available and licensed articles.
All the information that comes to Keenious's search results refers to actual publications. Unlike certain generative AI tools, Keenious does not 'invent' or 'hallucinate' the information in the articles themselves.
Laurea students and staff have access to the fee-based Keenious Plus service. Access the Keenious Plus service by creating a Keenious account through this link. Use Laurea's e-mail address when creating an account.
After creating an account, Keenious access Keenious at https://keenious.com. The logged-in user has access to all the features of Keenious.
Keenious offers three options for entering a search feed: PDF, URL or Text. The default is PDF, but it is probably easiest to use the Text option for the first use, which allows you to type a search feed in the opening text field (see picture below).
Keenious does not contain the full texts of the articles. Through Keenious you can read the abstracts of the articles, but the actual full texts are located e.g. on the publishers' websites. In Keenious, you will find links to both open access and licensed articles.
When you open an article in Keenious, the links appear below the abstract information.
Open access articles are marked with an open access icon. It is recommended to access Open Access articles by using the links shown under PDF or LINKS headings. They work often more reliably than Check Laurea UAS Access links.
In the search results list, you can use the Filters function to restrict the search result to open access articles only. The function should be used with caution, as a large number of articles licensed to Laurea will disappear from the search results.
Keenious can also be used directly in a word processing program (MS Word, Google Docs). Add Keenious add-on to your word processing program, and you'll be able to do article searches directly related to the text or part of it that you are working on. You can see the functions of Keenious by clicking on the Keenious icon that appears in the top right corner of your word processing program.
